Poll: $10,000 fine too hefty for public nuisance?

Chatham-Kent administration is bringing forward a new public nuisance by-law.

The proposed by-law would give police and by-law enforcement officers the ability to lay a fine up to $10,000 if the by-law in broken.

Council is set to vote on thee recommendations at tonight’s (May 24) council meeting.

A staff report states the recommended by-law prohibits parties which include one or more of the following nuisance activities:

– Public drunkenness or public intoxication

– The unlawful sale, furnishing, or distribution of alcoholic beverages or controlled substances

– The deposit of refuse on public or private property

– Damage to or destruction of public or private property

– Pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic, or illegal parking that obstructs the free flow of traffic or could interfere with the ability to provide emergency services

– Unreasonable noise, including loud music or shouting

– Unlawful open burning or fireworks

– Public disturbances, including public brawls or public fights

– Outdoor public urination, vomiting or defecation.

The by-law would not apply to parties within buildings or dwellings.

Chatham-Kent Police Services approached administration regarding the possibility of addressing public nuisances through the introduction of such by-law.
