A Wallaceburg teen’s dedication to academic excellence and community engagement was recently recognized by Community Living Wallaceburg.
Rachael Lotman was awarded with the agency’s Family Scholarship.
A graduate of Wallaceburg District Secondary School,
Lotman was presented with a $1,000 cheque by Executive Director David Katzman. Also present was Racheal’s mother Yvonne Lotman, a Community Support Worker with Community Living Wallaceburg.
In addition to receiving honours throughout her high school career, Lotman remains actively involved with multiple volunteer organizations that focus on the inclusion of individuals in the community. She is spending her summer assisting at Riverview Cemetery.
She has enrolled in Earth Science program at Carleton University in Ottawa with a goal of gaining a better understanding of the past and how to preserve the world in the future.
Created in 2006, the scholarship honours the outstanding commitment by agency staff in supporting individuals with an intellectual disability and is presented each year to an eligible child or grandchild of an agency staff member who is entering post-secondary education. It is awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community and demonstration of leadership skills.
Applicants are required to write an essay that describes their values and experiences as they relate to the agency’s mission statement of enabling people to realize their potential and choices within inclusive communities.
