The candles, which will be lit on the exact same day across the world, will honour the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home. By uniting in this way, on one very special day, the worldwide awareness campaign shines a light on the millions of pets still awaiting adoption and encourages communities to opt to adopt and reduce the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year. Chatham Kent Animal Rescue invites the community to the Remember Me Thursday candle-lighting ceremony, Thursday, September 24th, 2015 at 6:30pm-7:30pm taking place at Chatham Off-Leash Dog Park.
The Remember Me Thursday global awareness campaign held its inaugural event on Thursday,
September 26th, 2013. The program was championed by Mike Arms, President of Helen Woodward Animal Center, and creator of both the International Pet Adoptathon and the Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive (placing over 10 million pets in homes since 1999). Last year, the event illuminated 138 countries with individuals uniting to support the movement by holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, visiting the Remember Me Thursday website and spreading the message through social media. The enormous swell of support resulted in the topic trending on both Facebook and Twitter, garnering more than 200 million social media impressions.
Remember Me Thursday® asks organizations and individuals to dedicate the fourth Thursday of September, annually, to remembering the millions of orphan pets who lost their lives over the last year without the benefit of a loving home. (The Humane Society of the United States approximates this number at 3.4 million annually in the US.) Individuals are encouraged to get involved by spreading their own pet adoption stories on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels using #LIGHTFORPETS; changing their profile pictures to the Remember Me Thursday icon; organizing and/or attending a candle-lighting ceremony at their local shelter; lighting a virtual candle on-line at www.remembermethursday.org; and most importantly by always adopting and encouraging friends and family to do the same.
