The annual Dresden Plate Quilt Festival will be taking place Friday and Saturday in Dresden.
Sarah Pumfrey, organizer of the event, said the theme of this year 2-day event is “family.”
“Whether it is quilts made by mothers and daughters, sisters, aunts and nieces… the theme is quilts within a family,” she said. “We wanted the displays to tell a story, along with something to see.”
Pumfrey said one of the displays will feature a quilt made by a man’s grandmother, his mother and by his daughter-in-law.
“A history of quilting within a family,” she said.
Pumfrey said the quilts that will be on display were made by local community members, and some will be new, while others will be older “heirloom” type quilts.
The event runs Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting at the Trinity Christian Centre in downtown Dresden.
From there, participants will receive a passport to tour the town of Dresden, collecting stamps from participating stores and enter draws valued at $75, $50 and $25.
Pumfrey said quilts will also be on display at Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
The event continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost is $5.
The festival will conclude on Saturday evening with a separate musical event.
Pumfrey said “An Evening of Blues” will take place with April Shipp and Denise Pelley.
“They have never performed together before and probably never will again,” she said.
Shipp is a quilter who focuses her designs on the blues, whether it is portraits of blues singers or about specific songs. Pelley is set to sing a “medley of songs” based on Shipp’s designs.
“It will be something different and unique this year,” Pumfrey said. “We’re hoping for a sold-out show.”
Tickets are $25 for the evening show and are available now at Verna’s Sewing Corner, McKellar’s Flowers and Harvest Moon in Dresden.
