Letter: Walpole’s Rex Isaac proud of his election campaign

We live in great times when a First Nations man can represent a National Party in a Federal Election in Canada. I am so proud of all the First Nations People, not only in my riding but across Turtle Island, that participated, many for the 1st time. As First Nations People nothing has changed. Fears that many had of participating in a process, that was not common, have all faded. We are stronger as a People, united to bring our voices in harmony to leadership in Canada.

To Bev Shipley, I hope you will hear the voices of all your constituents. It is the job of an MP to represent all without prejudice. You have another four years, and I will be present, still at the local level, to advocate for all our constituents. I want to congratulate you on running a respectful campaign. It was a pleasure to have debated you. The people have spoken, and I respect each and everyone of them. As I hope you do the same.

To Jim Johnston and to Ken Filson you are honorable men. I can’t wait to sit and have dinner again sometime in the near future. Your campaigns were top notch and gracious. You should be proud. As well should those whom supported you.

As for me, the list of thank you’s is longer than Facebook has digital ink. I want to thank every single person that has shared a piece of their life with me, it did not fall on deaf ears. I want to thank my Volunteers. You have worked tirelessly, and are much in deserved a rest. I could never have done this without the support of the best team, anywhere. I want to thank everyone that had cast a ballot. Our democratic process is vital to the survival of our Country. I want to add a special thank you, to each and every individual that put an X next to my name. You have honoured me with your strength, kindness, and belief. I will never be the same.

One of the things I believe I have personally accomplished is to inspire our Youth. This was a particularly early reason I allowed my name stand. Through all the process of nomination to running as a candidate, I feel proud that our youth have taken notice. Leadership is not always about winning and losing. Leadership is about conduct. My hope is that my conduct was honourable and has inspired some of our future leaders to come.

To my community, if the rest of the world knew nothing of Walpole, pre-election, they should all know about us now. I have done my best to run a campaign honestly, with integrity, strength and discipline. My hope is that I have served you well. I am so proud to call Walpole my home. And it was amazing to read the headlines of not my name, but of my community.

In 4 years, after a back-to-back Conservative, now Liberal Majority government Canadians will realize if they are truly ready for change. The party for which I represent is a noble one. We care not for ourselves, but only for all people of Canada. I have stated for the record, another run is not off the table. If nominated again in the future I will let my name stand. A lot can happen in four years. My thoughts are for all of you. And for a stronger Canada in the days ahead.

Miigwetch, Merci, Thank you

– Rex Isaac, Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Federal NDP candidate
