A developing fall storm will affect Southern Ontario mid-week with rain and strong winds, and it has prompted a special weather advisory by Environment Canada for Chatham-Kent.

In the coming days, a developing fall storm over the American Midwest is expected to merge with moisture from the remnants of hurricane Patricia then track toward the Great Lakes.

Rainfall associated with this storm is forecast to spread into Southwestern Ontario late Tuesday night and reach the Golden Horseshoe area by Wednesday morning. Precipitation will then spread across Central and Eastern Ontario through the day on Wednesday. The rainfall may be heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms also possible. Total rainfall amounts are still somewhat uncertain, but between 25 and 40 mm are likely for most locales by the time the rain tapers to scattered showers from west to east Wednesday night through Thursday. A few regions, most likely those adjacent to the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario shorelines, could see rainfall approaching Environment Canada’s rainfall warning criterion of 50 mm within 24 hours.

Additionally, strong and gusty southwesterly winds are forecast to develop on Wednesday over Southwestern Ontario and Wednesday night over the remainder of Southern Ontario. Wind gusts to 70 km/h are likely, with even stronger winds possible near the eastern ends of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, where wind gusts may approach the warning criterion of 90 km/h.
