Giving honour to whom honour is due

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Our country just came through another time of remembrance this past week for those who have served and given their lives in the defense and security of Canada.

The Bible talks about giving honour to whom honour is due, and says this in Romans 13:7: “Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour.”

Our nation was touched this past October 22nd as we watched a ceremony at the National War Memorial that commemorated the lives of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

The two were slain in separate attacks a year ago.

Walking side by side, and laying a wreath together in their honour were former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Prime Minister-elect, Justin Trudeau.

Just days after a heated election campaign that brought out some fairly vicious attacks against one another, the two leaders laid those differences aside to do the right thing, to give honour where honour was due.

We need to see more of this type of thing happening with our nation’s political leaders.

As the nation and the world watched, respect and gratitude rose up collectively in the hearts and minds of Canadians, from sea to shining sea.

Actions such as this also garner the honour due these political leaders, and we should respond by upholding them in prayer as they lead our country.
