Transport smashes into overpass in Sarnia

opp overpass

The Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently on scene at the 402 Highway within the east bound lanes at Indian Road within the City of Sarnia investigating a collision between a transport truck / trailer and the Indian Road overpass.

Investigation has revealed that on this date at approximately 12:15 p.m. a transport truck towing a loaded flatbed trailer was east bound on the 402 Highway at Indian Road within the City of Sarnia. The trailer’s load was obviously too high to pass under the Indian Road overpass. The load struck the overpass causing the load to separate from the trailer coming to rest within the east bound lanes of the 402 Highway. As well, a considerable amount of structural damage has been done to the Indian Road overpass preventing any kind of vehicular movement on the east bound 402 Highway.

All east bound vehicular traffic between the Bluewater Bridge and Indian Road is being diverted to Front Street, to Exmouth Street and then back onto Indian Road within the City of Sarnia. From there, all diverted traffic will be able to return to the 402 Highway at Indian Road. Any commercial traffic entering Canada from the U.S.A. is being staged at Canada Customs and released intermittently in order to avoid commercial traffic congestion within the City of Sarnia.

The Ministry of Transportation has been engaged and a structural engineer is expected to assess the damaged overpass. The OPP expect the 402 Highway to be closed for several hours. An update to the road closure will be provided as additional information is gathered. There have been no injuries reported. There are no Health and Safety concerns as to the tractor trailer’s spilled load.
