K-9 Unit helps track fleeing drunk driver

On Saturday December 12, 2015 at approximately 8:37 p.m., the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was dispatched to a two vehicle, motor vehicle collision, at the intersection of Oil Heritage Road and London Line, Town of Plymptom-Wyoming.

Witnesses at the scene reported that one of the involved drivers had fled the scene on foot and was last seen traveling towards the Town of Wyoming.

OPP obtained a physical description of the male driver and activated the Lambton OPP Canine Unit.

Canine attended the location and commenced a track while officers patrolled the surrounding area.

A short time later, a male party fitting the description of the suspected driver, was located walking on Broadway Street, Wyoming.

OPP officers made contact with the male who was uncooperative with police.

Investigating officers quickly formed the opinion that the driver of the motor vehicle was impaired due to the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

OPP officers then attempted to arrest the male party however the male resisted arrest.

Officers were able to gain control of the male suspect and safely arrested the male without injury to the officers or the male suspect.

The accused was then transported to the Lambton OPP – Petrolia Detachment for breath testing which resulted in readings more than three times the legal limit.

No injuries were sustained by any party as a result of the collision.

As a result, a 35 year-old, man from Enniskillen Township, ON was charged with:

– Driving While Ability Impaired

– Driving With More Than 80mgs of Alcohol in Blood

– Resist Peace Officer

– Driving While Under Suspension

– Fail to Remain

The accused will appear in the Sarnia Ontario Court of Justice on Monday February 15, 2015.
