CKPS discuss ‘risky’ & ‘disturbing’ photo shoot

Three high flying photographers caught the attention of thousands of people on social media on Tuesday, after a series of photos were shared from atop the Boardwalk on the Thames condominium project in downtown Chatham.

The trio also caught the eye of the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

“Public safety was really our first concern here,” said Const. Renee Cowell, public information officer for the CKPS. “To see people up on a crane unharnessed taking photos was very disturbing.”

Cowell said the police have made contact with two of the three photographers.

“Since the photos have gone public, we’ve been able to identify all three people involved,” she said, adding that they received the photographs via a third party. “We’ve since spoken to two of them and warned them of their risky and illegal behaviour. We’re hoping to speak to the third person today.”

Cowell said the CKPS wanted to ensure the men involved were warned about their behaviour.

“Although those responsible for the pics were unharmed, this incident could have had a very tragic ending and that’s what we want to impress on them,” she said. “We’re exercising our right to discretion and will not be laying charges.”

Kyle Wicks, who along with Matt Kett and Dylan Johnson were responsible for the photos, told the Sydenham Current he is “very thankful” for how they were treated by the police.

“Won’t be doing it again, that’s for sure,” he said, “I encourage others to stay aground shooting and remember safety first.”

Wicks said he wanted to “capture Chatham in a new light for people to see.”

“Give them a refreshment,” he said.
