Crime Stoppers sign being replaced

The damaged Crime Stoppers sign outside of Wallaceburg on Baseline Road is set to be replaced. However, the coordinator of the charitable program is frustrated to fork out the $1,400 to replace the sign.

“The unfortunate part is the cost has to be absorbed by the program,” Const. David Bakker, the coordinator for Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers, told the Sydenham Current.

“We are a charity and have to fundraise for every dollar we spend. It’s just lost money to the program to replace the sign. I understand some things, but damaging property to just damage it is just stupid. Never have been able to understand it.”

Bakker said the sign has been damaged for for quite some time.

“As a result the board had to look at a better option for the sign,” he said. “We have decided to go with a standard solid aluminum sign this time. The one currently located there is plastic and thinner aluminum. We discussed using the same material with a plywood backer but we’re concerned it would break again if hit hard enough.”

A local resident contacted the Sydenham Current with their concerns, after walking their dogs in the area.

“I picked up 25 bottles there on Friday and I noticed a whole bunch of them in the ditch which I haven’t retrieved and a lot of broken ones laying down below,” said the person, who we will not name. “Is that a bullseye for the drinkers that are coming into town or what?”
