Firefighters are at the scene this morning, after a car apparently plunged into the Sydenham River in Wallaceburg.

Witnesses say a car went into the water on Water Street and Park Street in Wallaceburg at around 6:20 a.m.

“I was getting ready for work and I heard tires squealing,” said a witness, who we won’t name.

“Then I heard it hit something. When we went outside, we didn’t see anything at first. We checked the river and sure enough, there were bubbles. It was scary.”

The witness said they spotted a man in the vacant lot on Water Street.

“He was soaked, so I got him some towels and called 911.”

Members of the Chatham-Kent Fire Department dive team have been called to the scene, along with a crew from Chatham Towing.

Details are scarce at the moment and there is no word on injuries.

We’ll provide more information when it becomes available.
