A pair of local businesses and a youth hockey team combined their efforts this weekend all in support of the Wallaceburg splash pad project.

The Wallaceburg Lakers Atom Rep team, sponsored by McDonald’s, put down their hockey sticks for a few hours at the Wallaceburg Home Hardware on Saturday to help sell some raffle tickets for a barbecue donated by Home Hardware.

“Each year we try to do something with our sponsor,” said Shane Fraleigh, head coach of the team of nine and 10-year-olds.

“We approached McDonald’s and it was something that we could do with them and we decided to help out with the splash pad. We do it to promote our kids doing stuff in the community and making them better people.”

Deadra Kilbride, a splash pad committee member and an administrative assistant for McDonald’s in Wallaceburg and Chatham, said the volunteer support for the splash pad is greatly appreciated.

“I think it’s wonderful that they want to give back to the community and starting at a young age,” she said.

“It’s nice, it teaches them at a young age to give back. It’s wonderful for the splash pad to have the help as well. The fundraising is going very well and we are very happy with the support. Home Hardware has been a big community supporter as well.”

Len Wolfe, owner of the Wallaceburg Home Hardware, said he was happy to offer up a barbecue for the raffle.

“I’ve known D (Deadra Kilbride), she’s been a very good friend of mine for a long time,” Wolfe said. “She told me about this splash pad and all the great things they are doing to help collect money for it.”

When the team wrapped up on Saturday, the team had helped raise $417 for the splash pad project.

The kids will be back next Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. selling raffle tickets once again at Home Hardware.

The committee currently has about $50,000 raised of their $200,000 goal.

They are eyeing to have the project completed by July.
