District 40 of the Knights of Columbus kicked off its Ontario Special Olympics flag relay by having members of the St. Clair Catholic District School Board’s Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) sign the flag, as it began its trek towards the provincial games in Durham.

Six Special Olympics flags will be criss-crossing the province on their way to Durham.

The District 40 flag relay begins in Wallaceburg before heading to Port Lambton, Corunna, Petrolia, Watford and St. Clair Township.

“The Knights of Columbus have been a major sponsor of Special Olympics since the first games were held in Chicago in 1968,” says Mike Hendrycks, District 40 Deputy.

“The event has grown every year and now there are more than 18,000 athletes in Ontario alone.”

Since 1968, the Knights of Columbus organization has raised more than $500 million in support of the Special Olympics.

“We are proud of the Knights of Columbus and their work to support this important event and the many skilled and dedicated athletes, who compete each year,” says Deb Crawford, Superintendent of Education and Board Advisor to SEAC.

The Ontario Special Olympics in Durham will be held from June 1st to 3rd.
