Financial boost for the Wallaceburg Lakers

The Wallaceburg Lakers appear to be receiving a financial boost, which their executive hopes will turn around the struggling Great Lakes Junior ‘C’ Hockey League franchise.

“I have been working for sometime now trying to get financial assistance for our team so it can be competitive in the league,” said Jim McCrea, president of the team, in an e-mail.

After a vote on Saturday, the Lakers accepted an offer from a group of investors who will guarantee the Lakers stay in Wallaceburg for a minimum of 10 years, McCrea said.

“They have agreed to pay off all past debts and infuse a great deal of money to help run a team that will be much better than we have seen in the past few years when we struggled with debt and could not even meet the basic needs to be able to attract quality players to our centre,” he said.

McCrea said he “cannot reveal much more at this time” but reports say more details, including the identify of the group of investors, could be known later this week.

“In this time of factories closing, schools closing, it is very tough for this town to receive enough sponsor moneys to survive,” McCrea said.

“I and all the executive have and will do whatever (is) needed to keep the Lakers in this town and make a team we can all be proud of.”

We’ll provide more information when it becomes available.
