Bus driver charged after hitting pedestrian

A bus driver in Petrolia was charged after hitting a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Lambton OPP officials say on Friday May 13, at 11 a.m., the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a 911 call regarding a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Petrolia Line and Oil Heritage Road, Petrolia, Ontario.

Lambton OPP along with Enniskillen Fire Department and Lambton Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to scene.

Investigation revealed that a pedestrian was crossing Oil Heritage Road, at a marked crosswalk just north of the intersection, when a school bus turning north onto Oil Heritage Road from Petrolia Line struck the pedestrian within the intersection.

The pedestrian was consequently transported to hospital by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the school bus was identified as a 63-year-old Petrolia man.

The accused was charged and issued a Provincial Offences Notice for:

– Fail to Yield to Pedestrian

The OPP would like to remind drivers that effective January 1st, 2016, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the entire roadway at:

– Pedestrian crossovers; and,

– School crossings and all intersections where there is a crossing guard.

Only when pedestrians and school crossing guards are safely on the sidewalk, can drivers and cyclists proceed.

Drivers can be fined $150 to $500 and 3 demerit points for offences at pedestrian crossings, school crossings and at crosswalks where there are traffic signals.

Fines are doubled in Community Safety Zones.
