23rd Tinman triathlon held at WDSS – See Photos

The 23rd annual Tinman Triathlon took place at Wallaceburg District Secondary School on Thursday (May 19), under bright and sunny skies.

“It’s going so well, we couldn’t of asked for more beautiful weather,” said Nancy Schinkelshoek, a teacher at WDSS and one of the event organizers.

Schinkelshoek said a total of 261 participants took part in the event, with 91 total entries, 31 individuals and 60 teams.

“We have teams here today that are elementary teams of six and we have teams with staff or students with three,” she said.

“Fun with fitness is our theme and we’re really seeing a lot of people challenging themselves, really being proud of themselves for giving it a try.”

Schinkelshoek said kids from all secondary schools in the region, including some Sarnia and Chatham schools, took part in the event.

“We have alumni that come and community members too,” she said.

“The community has been absolutely great with supporting us through this event with prize donations and with food. They donated all the food we needed to prepare the lunch. Every participant gets a free lunch and we celebrate at the end of the event with a nice lunch at the end.”

Schinkelshoek said over 60 volunteer students from WDSS helped make the event happen. once again this year.

“Just helping people knowing which way to go, maybe giving them a high five when they need it,” she said. “The success of this event depends on them really. If we didn’t have them, a lot of people would get really lost. They’re just wonderful. Every year, year after tear, they step up for me and make it all happen.”
