A 12-year-old boy has been charged with assault after allegedly shoving his teacher.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say yesterday, a student was asked several times to complete work in class.

Police say he refused to cooperate and started packing up his belongings.

Upon being told he could not leave the classroom, the boy pushed his teacher causing her to take several steps backwards.

The 12-year-old Chatham boy was arrested and charged with assault.

He was released to a parent pending a future court date of June 13, 2016.

  1. Let’s take a step back here. Why did he not want to finish his work in class? Did the teacher ask him or demand him to finish. We do not know what was going on in his mind at the time. Maybe he was just being defiant, or maybe he was tired of being TOLD what to do. We strive to give our children independence, to make them responsible for themselves and when they do they get punished. I will not say that shoving the teacher was the right thing to do but how close was the teacher that he was able to shove her and “causing her to take several steps backwards”. Someone gets in my face that close I might be temped to push back as well teacher, boss or complete stranger. There is such a thing as personal space. Is this the first time with this child or is this a repeat thing. Same with the teacher, has she gotten that close to other children.
It works both ways though. In my child hood school days I used to get the ruler across the knuckles for every spelling and mathematics mistake. Thank God those days are over. On the other hand, some sort of discipline needs to be in place. And you can’t always blame the teacher or the parents for the behaviour. Children, no people, learn from their surroundings. Grow up in a tough neighbourhood and you become tough. Grow up in a loving caring area and you trust everyone. (You are also probably the first one to get beat on when you cross that line).
    Just saying.
