A Port Lambton hockey prospect turned some heads this past weekend in Toronto.
Brooke ‘Gus’ Lauwers competed in the RushHockey Rising Stars event. Heading into the “invite only” camp, Gus was ranked in the Top 100 in all of North America for girls ages 12-13 in the Peewee division.
“Her nerves worked against her on Friday but she shook it off and played hard and fierce on Saturday, scoring two in their first game,” said Jody Lauwers, Gus’ mom.
“Her teammates came from all over North America, with the furthest being from California. The rinks were lined with scouts, who were mainly watching the Bantam/Midget age group. We watched some fantastic hockey with some crazy amazing talent.”
Gus, who is a Grade 7 student at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Port Lambton, attended a scholarship seminar at the event held by Josh Brandwene from Penn State and a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) seminar with Brian Gosling from Western University.
On the opening day of the camps she underwent Fitness Endurance Testing, led by Jamie Carlson, the athletic therapist from Wilfred Laurier University.
Her coaches throughout the weekend were various players from the CIS women’s ranks.
Gus told the Sydenham Current back in April that she wants to continue playing hockey as she gets older.
“I want to get a scholarship for university hockey, but I also want to be an eye doctor,” she said.
