Walpole Island First Nation Elder Abuse Awareness Committee and the Walpole Island Home and Community Care Program will be hosting a day of community events to commemorate International Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Wednesday June 15.

The day will begin at the Tecumseh Monument, with a parade commencing at 10 a.m.

The parade will end at the Walpole Island Sports Complex, where a community potluck feast and live musical entertainment provided by Sweet Pea & the Elderberry Jammers will begin at 12 p.m.

The Elder Abuse Awareness Committee and Home and Community Care are hosting the day’s activities to raise awareness of the issue.

It is estimated one in ten seniors have experienced actions, or deliberate inaction, by a person in a position of trust, which causes harm to the older adult.

This day is to celebrate and demonstrate respect to the older adults of Walpole Island.

All are welcome to attend and encouraged to show support by wearing purple and bringing a favourite dish and your favourite elders too.

Craft vendors also welcome.
