The severe thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent has ended.

Isolated funnel clouds are possible, as Environment Canada issues a severe thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent.

Environment Canada officials say scattered thunderstorms will affect portions of southwestern Ontario this afternoon (July 31) and early evening.

“Rainfall amounts up to 50 mm in an hour as well as isolated funnel clouds are associated with some of these storms,” Environment Canada officials said in a statement released at 3:23 p.m.

“Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”

Environment Canada officials added severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
