Torrential downpours and damaging winds possible

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in Chatham-Kent.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

A line of thunderstorms extending from Southern Georgian Bay and Lake Huron into Lower Michigan will move across Southern Ontario late this afternoon into this evening.

Torrential downpours and damaging winds are the main threats. Many thunderstorms will also contain frequent lightning.

Motorists should be prepared for sudden very low visibility in torrential downpours, along with ponding of water on roads.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Hail is also possible. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #ONStorm.
