Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton says he is hopeful for the future of Wallaceburg’s ER, after an investigator’s report on the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance was released this week.

McNaughton also responded to the announcement made by Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, that the province intends to appoint a hospital supervisor for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) hospitals.

“I have spoken with Minister Hoskins directly regarding the decision to send a hospital supervisor for the three CKHA hospitals,” said McNaughton.

“After reading Ms. Adamson’s report, I am increasingly hopeful for the future of the 24 hour 7 day per week emergency department and for the Sydenham District Hospital in general.”

Ontario’s intent to appoint a supervisor is based on the recommendations from Bonnie Adamson, the provincial investigator who was appointed on June 8, 2016 to investigate matters at the CKHA where an impasse between the Sydenham District Hospital board and the CKHA administration had developed.

“Previously at Queen’s Park, and again in our recent conversations the Minister said that he agrees with me, and agrees with the people of Wallaceburg and Kent County, in supporting the importance of maintaining a 24 hour 7 day per week emergency department in Wallaceburg,” said McNaughton.

McNaughton said that he welcomes the appointment of a provincial supervisor and agrees with the recommendations from Adamson including those to: “… restore robust governance and administrative/clinical leadership to ensure sustainable and appropriate oversight of patient care and financial management” and “… in light of the fact that the SDH is currently being de facto operated without an Administrator, Chief Nursing Executive or Chief of Staff, the Investigator believes that a further investigation is not required and that a Supervisor should be appointed.”

McNaughton said he will continue to fight for SDH.

“From the days before I was first elected I have been well aware of the importance of Sydenham District Hospital to the health and well-being of the people of Wallaceburg, Walpole Island, north Kent and south Lambton,” stated McNaughton.

“I will continue to support the diligent efforts of the Sydenham District Hospital board and I will work to preserve a front-line, 24/7 health care facility here in Wallaceburg and not allow it to become merely a first-aid station en route to Chatham or Sarnia.”
