Peace is not dependent on the absence of conflict

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

It is not known who said the following phrase about peace, but it is profound: “Peace is not dependent on the absence of conflict but the presence of God.”

Nine years ago I was in the University Hospital in London to be with a couple who were both having surgery.

Donna Davis was donating a kidney to her husband, Pat, who had been on dialysis for the previous 20 years.

Initially, the surgery went well and Pat’s body responded to the new organ.

However, shortly afterward there was a change and it looked like Pat’s body would reject the new kidney, just as it had done to the previous three donors.

I remember going in to see Pat and pray with him before he went in for more surgery.

This man was completely at peace.

He let me know that God was in control and that matters were in his hands.

He was not worried.

Wow! I sure didn’t see that coming!

As it turned out, things turned around and he was fine.

I learned a great lesson that day that peace is not dependent on the absence of conflict but on the presence of God.

Pat was so mindful of God’s presence with him in that hospital room that he couldn’t help but be anything but peaceful.

What about you?

Do you fret and worry at the first sign of conflict?

Might this be an indication that the Lord Jesus is not the One who is captain of your life?

I encourage you today to surrender your life to Him and take up His offer of peace for your soul.

Here is what He said in Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to Me, all who labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Now that is one great offer, don’t you think?
