An annual traditional at The Dutch Market in Chatham has sparked some controversy on social media.

The business posted a series of photos and video on their Facebook page from the weekend, when they held their annual ‘Sinterklaas’ event to celebrate the holiday season.

The photos depicted customers posing with Sinterklaas (who is a Santa Claus-type figure in the Dutch tradition) and Sinterklaas’ companion Zwarte Piet, also known as ‘Black Pete’.

Many people expressed their displeasure online about seeing the Black Pete character with what appeared to be ‘blackface’ makeup on.

“This might be a part of your tradition, but (I really hope) you know the blackface is so unbelievably wrong. Know better, do better,” said Karen Green on Facebook.

“This is sick, and beyond bigoted,” posted Kara Go Sounders. “Lots of things are ‘tradition.’ Doesn’t make them RIGHT. Got a problem with political correctness? Then you have a problem with basic human empathy, kindness, and basic manners, which is all “political correctness” is.”

“I cannot support an establishment that will use blackface… even in the name of tradition,” said Laura Brinkmann on Facebook. “Some things we are supposed to evolve beyond. Maybe take a cue from those still in Europe that are using chimney soot on the clothes and not covering the person’s face. And in the meantime take a lesson in historical context as to why this is so offensive here (and in fact now in Europe too).”

While many people were against the display, others went to bat for the business.

“Wonderful to see them continuing their traditions and allowing others to take part!” posted Virginia Polowick. “Those not willing to read up on the actual historical meaning of this tradition and are simply criticizing the actors in this story display a lack of respect for the owners heritage! These are actors portraying a story.. In costume. In our free society you have a right to your opinion.. However, branding an establishment as racist due to your ignorance of their history is absurd!”

“No apology is needed,” said Darryl Vanderwoude. “How many of these so easily offended people complained in the past? But once this tradition made news last Christmas everyone jumped on being offended fad. News flash, calling anyone who supports this a bigot is only fueling the resentment towards you.”

The owners of The Dutch Market did offer an apology, as referenced in this Blackburn News article. The general manager of the business told The Chatham Daily News they would consider changing their approach and the look of Zwarte Piet at future events.

Traditionally, Zwarte Piet is portrayed as black because he is a Moor from Spain. Children are often told that Zwarte Piet is black because he is covered in soot from a chimney, while he helps Sinterklaas deliver gifts.
