As the calendar flipped over to 2017, various provincial and municipal regulations changed along with it.

Here are 12 of them that stand out:

– The province’s cap-and-trade program goes into effect. Ontario’s auditor general expects this to cost the average household an additional $156 this year.

– The province’s share of HST, totaling 8%, is being scrapped from hydro bills.

– Restaurant chains, with at least 20 locations, will be required to include calorie counts on their menus.

– Police officers in Ontario can no longer request ID from people, based simply on their race or the fact that they are present in a high-crime neighbourhood.

– Tow truck drivers are being required to disclose their rates up front, provide itemized invoices and accept credit card payments.

– Payday loan companies will have a lower maximum cost of $18 per $100 borrowed.

– First-time homebuyers will be eligible for refunds on the Land Transfer Tax. The total is up to $4,000.

– Travel agents’ will be required to include all fees and taxes for any prices displayed in advertisements.

– The fee for reinstating a suspended driver’s licence will jump from $180 to $198

– Any private career colleges that have shut down will be required to refund tuition for students or complete their training.

– At least 30 minutes of outdoor time each day is required for children in before-school and after-school child care programs.

– Most menthol-flavoured tobacco products are now illegal to sell.
