Pair of impaired driving charges laid

A Toronto man faces impaired driving charges after being stopped on the 401 in Chatham-Kent.

Chatham-Kent OPP officials say on January 11, around 9:15 p.m., a member of Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on highway 401 near Drake Road.

While speaking with the driver, the officer determined the driver had consumed alcohol. A roadside screening test was administered and the driver registered a “Fail”. The driver was transported to the detachment for further tests.

As a result, a 29-year-old man from Toronto, has charged with the following:

– Drive motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada,

– Speeding, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act,

– Driver fail to surrender licence, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, and

– Drive motor vehicle, no validation on plate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on February 15, 2017 to answer to the charges.

Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is actively monitoring the “Big 4” driving behaviours; impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt usage.

In a separate incident, a Kent Bridge teen faces impaired driving charges after a crash on Wednesday night.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say last night, shortly after 6 p.m. police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Hill Road.

The driver lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway and struck a hydro pole.

Through investigation, police suspected the teen was driving while under the influence of alcohol.

A roadside test was administered and he failed.

The youth was arrested and transported to police headquarters for further breath tests.

The 17-year-old Kent Bridge youth has been charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, drinking underage and driving as a young driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

He was released to a parent pending a future court date of January 23, 2017.
