Stolen vehicle, string of crashes leads to arrest

A Sarnia man faces multiple charges folloing a bizarre string of incidents on Thursday.

Sarnia Police Service officials say on January 26, at approximately 5 p.m., an officer from the Sarnia Police Service Community Response Division attended an address in the 200 block of Campbell Street regarding a green Chevrolet Silverado that had been stolen just shortly before.

While the officer was taking a report regarding the stolen truck another call was received that a green Chevrolet Silverado was driving dangerously down Plank Road and had caused multiple collisions on Indian Road South, leaving a trail of damaged vehicles between Plank Road and Highway 40.

Information received was that the vehicle was travelling at excessive speeds, driving head on into traffic, forcing cars off the road, and side swiping others.

In total, four vehicles were involved in the collisions, including the stolen truck that the suspect was in.

All vehicles needed to be towed due to damage and the fact that they ended up in ditches.

The suspect, who was driving the stolen truck, was still in the vehicle upon police arrival.

He was arrested immediately for dangerous driving and possession of stolen property.

As the officers attempted to speak to the accused he did not make any sense and appeared to be under the influence of some sort of controlled substance.

The accused was transported to the police station where he refused to submit to any sort of alcohol or drug screening and was subsequently held for a bail hearing later today.

The accused is a 35-year-old male from Sarnia and faces the following charges:

– Driving While Ability Impaired by Drug

– Dangerous Driving

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

– 3 Counts of Breach of Probation

– Evaluation by Officer Not Complied with (Drug Test)

Police officials say it was also later determined that the accused, between the time he had stolen the vehicle and then was involved in a collision, was involved in another strange incident. The suspect had driven to an address on Davis Street, entered the residence, in which he knew no one, and attempted to steal a wallet.

Fortunately, a resident was home and was able to retrieve the wallet from the suspect and the suspect left without incident.

The most miraculous thing about this entire incident was that no one was sustained any serious injuries.

The Indian Road South was closed from approximately 5 p.m. to 7:35 p.m.

Here are some photos of the vehicles involved:
