The Sarnia Police Service is investigating a hit and run collision which occurred today at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Matthews Avenue.
Police officials say on April 4, 2017 at approximately noon, an officer from The Sarnia Police Traffic Unit observed a silver Pontiac Grand Prix with improper plates in the area of Christina Street North and Charlesworth Avenue. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle for this traffic offence, but the driver refused to pull over. In the interest of public safety, the officer discontinued pursuing this vehicle as it continued to travel eastbound on Charlesworth Avenue.
At approximately 12:04 p.m., the suspect vehicle was travelling southbound on Matthews Avenue and failed to stop at Michigan Avenue resulting in a collision with a westbound vehicle on Michigan Avenue. The suspect failed to remain at the scene and continued driving southbound through Lakeview Cemetery. The other driver was not injured in the collision.
Witnesses observed three young females exit the car just prior to the suspect vehicle leaving the cemetery towards Colborne Road. From there the driver continued southbound on Colborne Road at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle as he approached the S-bend at Capel Street. As a result, the vehicle struck a hydro pole and a tree coming to a stop. The driver was last seen running from this scene, westbound toward the area of Willowdale Crescent. He is described as a young male, white, wearing beige pants and a dark jacket.
