Grade 1 students at Holy Family Catholic School in Wallaceburg learned about giving back to the community recently in class.

And the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter is reaping the benefits as a result.

“It was a combination of a couple of different subject areas,” said Angela Ellis, the Grade 1 teacher at the school.

“So we were taking what we were learning about living things in science and community for social studies.”

Ellis said the students came up with an idea to persuade students from the school to bring in donations or to substitute a prize that they earned at school for an object that could be donated to the animal shelter.

“Plus they also took some money that the staff gave and they decided what items they should purchase as a classroom,” she said.

“We have some detergent, we had bleach and cleaning supplies. Dog toys, dog treats, and dog food.”

Ellis said she believes ot was a great learning experience for the students.

“They were persuading the school to give back to the community, rather than taking a prize for themselves,” she said.

“Plus they learned, not only about caring for the community, but just thinking about living things in general and doing their part to help.”

Ellis said it was her class gathering the items, but the entire school community contributed by making donations.
