‘Local Food Week’ across Chatham-Kent
A flag-raising and farmers’ market at the Civic Centre will kick off Chatham-Kent’s celebration of Local Food Week Monday June 5.
The event, held in conjunction with the Kent Federation of Agriculture, will begin at 11 a.m. Locally-grown produce will be on site for sale from 11 to 2 p.m.
The purpose of the Farmers Market is to promote local products and encourage consumers to think local and be aware of the abundant diverse products that are grown and produced in our community.
Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to come out and meet some local producers, purchase local product and be amazed at the vast variety of products available so early in our growing season.
There will also be a BBQ taking place so consumers will be able to enjoy lunch as they visit and purchase some local products.
The week of June 4-10 will be celebrated as “Local Food Week” across Ontario. This is the fourth year the Province has recognized “Local Food Week.”

Chatham-Kent’s Waste and Recycling Services department has prepared a DVD helping children understand what happens to their recyclable and non-recyclable items once collected from their home and how their behaviour has a direct impact on the environment.
The DVD uses Quacker the Duck to educate children in Grades Four and Five about the importance of protecting our environment. It focuses on the value of good waste management practices, proper sorting of recyclable household materials and the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Rick Kucera, Chatham-Kent Manager of Waste and Recycling Services, said “students learn that waste is something every single one of us CAN do something about. Your individual actions can make a difference to our local environment.”
Copies of the DVD have been delivered to every elementary school in Chatham-Kent. Additional copies are available by calling the Waste & Recycling Services office at 519-360-1998.
More information on recycling and what is recyclable in Chatham-Kent can be found in the residential Recycling and Waste Collection Guide or by visiting our website @ www.chatham-kent.ca.
