The Defiance Youth Program has wrapped up for another year, and some schools and students are richer as a result.

Mark Childs, president of the Defiance Running Club, told the Sydenham Current that three Wallaceburg schools took part in the program this year, and earned money for books and technology.

“The outcome was a little bit better than we expected with the schools,” Childs said.

Students at H.W. Burgess Public School ended up running 695 kms, Wallaceburg Christian School had 1,360 kms and Christ the King Catholic School had 3,925 kms.

“Overall a very good effort by the three schools and the total is just shy of 6,000 kms,” he said.

The club donated $0.25 cents for every kilometre the students at the schools ran, resulting in a total donation overall of approximately $2,000.

“It goes towards their school, mainly for books, but it can be used for technology,” Childs said.

The club also donated another $300 in prize money to the top two children at each school, with each of them getting $50.

Childs said they are looking into expanding the program next year, and some pending grants applications could boost the money doled out.

“We are going to expand regardless, but the amount we expand will depend on the amount of additional funding,” he said.

Childs said the club is looking to sign up the other schools in Wallaceburg, along with Riverview Central School in Port Lambton.
