‘Chain reaction’ crash on the 401

(OPP)

Five transports were towed from the scene after a crash on the 401 in Chatham-Kent.

Police officials say on July 28 at around 5:15 p.m., Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a five vehicle “chain reaction” collision on Highway 401 near Merlin Road.

Police say due to slow moving traffic in the construction zone and eastbound tractor trailer stopped suddenly causing the following tractor trailer to collide into the rear of the first tractor trailer.

Three other tractor trailers were also involved in the collision. In total, five vehicles sustained moderate damage and had to be towed from the scene.

Three of the drivers were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Highway 401 was closed to allow for the safe removal of all the tractor trailers involved.
