Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited announced it expects to invest $36 million into a new Cascades casino at 615 Richmond Street in Chatham and create up to 200 new jobs in the Municipality of Chatham-Ken., The proposed new casino would feature over 300 slots and 10 table games, and feature Gateway’s signature restaurant brands MATCH Eatery & Public House and The Buffet. Construction is expected to start this spring and It is planned that the new casino will open by mid-2019.

The owner has been charged and the dogs have been euthanized after a dog attack last month in Wallaceburg. The owner has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and faces a future court date. The charges stem from an alleged incident on February 5 at Jaycee Park on Larkwood Street in Wallaceburg when two dogs escaped from their home and attacked a three-year-old boy.

Animal control officials in Chatham-Kent say the dogs that attacked the boy, had attacked before. Through the investigation it was discovered that these dogs had previously attacked two other dogs, animal control officials allege. The two dogs were humanely euthanized on March 19.

A Wallaceburg man is hoping to become the next MPP in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Brian Everaert, who now lives in Wilkesport, will be on the ballot in June as the Trillium Party of Ontario candidate in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Already throwing their names in the mix are incumbent MPP Monte McNaughton, the Progressive Conservative candidate, and Todd Case, the NDP candidate. The 42nd Ontario general election is scheduled to be held on June 7.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance announced the appointment of their new Board Chair, Vice Chairs and Committee Chairs. Hospital officials say the appointments were made with careful consideration following an extensive Board orientation in late February. Wallaceburg’s Greg Aarssen has been named the new Board Chair, Sharon Pfaff is the Vice Chair, Robert Dye is Vice Chair and Treasurer and Lori Marshall is the Secretary.

And finally… as a result of the Calls To Action recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, A.A. Wright Public School in Wallaceburg is doing their part to bring indigenous ways of knowing and learning into the school in a meaningful way. Back on March 5, a drum making night was held and this past Tuesday a ceremony to awaken the drums was held as well.
