Group calls ‘Carnage Alley’ C-K’s worst road

(OPP)

CAA has launched its annual worst roads campaign, and local road safety advocates want Carnage Alley first on the list.

In a media release a CAA spokesperson stated road issues usually know no boundaries.

Votes are compiled and released as a provincial top-10 list along with a series of regional lists.

“We’re trying to solicit feedback from all road users, not only motorists… we want to know what the pain points are,” states a CAA representative.

For Build the Barrier advocates, it is clear what the pain points are in Chatham-Kent.

It is Carnage Alley and the high number of collisions, injuries and fatalities that continue to occur between London and Tilbury, the group says.

“It’s hard to imagine a worse road than one that has caused so many fatalities and destroyed the lives of so many families,” states Storey, founder of Build the Barrier, an advocacy group lobbying for construction of a concrete median barrier on Highway 401 between Tilbury and Windsor.

“We know the people of Chatham-Kent are great at raising awareness about issues related to our community through online voting. This is another excellent opportunity to raise awareness at the provincial level that this road needs some serious, life-saving improvements. And we need them now.”

Voting is open until April 15.

The Build the Barrier groups says there was a total of five fatalities and 10 serious hospitalizations in collisions on Highway 401 between Tilbury and London in 2017, along with numerous incidents that caused significant property damage and road closures, but did not require hospitalization.

The group says 2018 continues to see a high rate of incidents on this section of Highway 401.
