25th Tartan Tinman Triathlon held at WDSS (Photos)

The sun was shining brightly down on Wallaceburg District Secondary School on Thursday for the 25th annual Tartan Tinman Triathlon.

“Are we ever lucky?” Nancy Schinkelshoek, teacher at WDSS and the event organizer, told the Sydenham Current.

“Every year it seems to bless us with good weather. There is a nice breeze, it’s not too hot, it’s not raining… it’s awesome.”

Schinkelshoek said approximately 165 people participate in the event this year, slightly less than previous years due to some date conflicts.

“A lot of kids having fun,” she said.

“Some community members, a few alumni are back again. It’s great. Everybody that is here is glad they’re here.”

Schinkelshoek said there are over 90 volunteers, mostly students, helping out with the event.

“Every one of them is doing a great job,” she said.

“This is a huge event with a lot of people contributing. We have community support here too. They all give us donations for doors prizes, for food, you name it… they’ve supported this event.”

Schinkelshoek said putting on the event is a true team effort.

“It’s a big deal for us,” she said.

“It really promotes fun with fitness is what we’re looking for. It gives them a chance to try something different that they maybe wouldn’t think of. I know we’ve got several people that have done triathlons through this event.”

She added: “It’s such a huge team effort. I’m not going to single anyone out because then I’ll forgot someone… but, what a great team that it takes to out this on. We’re really appreciative of all the cooperation.”
