‘Overwhelming’ number of calls about pets left in vehicles

Officials with Animal Control in Chatham-Kent say they have received an “overwhelming amount of calls” regarding animals left unattended in vehicles.

Jason Hamm, manager of Animal Control Services, told the Sydenham Current he wants to educate the public about the dangers of leaving your pets in you vehicle when it is hot and humid.

“As we are all aware the warm weather is now among us and unfortunately Animal Control has received numerous calls already this year regarding animals left unattended in vehicles,” Hamm said.

“This is very dangerous to the animal’s health and could result in serious harm or even death coming to your pet.”

Hamm said some people may think leaving your animal in the vehicle for a few minutes while they grab something quick is acceptable.

“However, on a 25 degree Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit) day the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to above 37 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) in just minutes,” he said.

“Temperatures like this can cause your pet to have a stroke or cause serious brain damage. We are reminding people the best place to leave your pets on a hot day is at home, where it is cool and your pet is comfortable.”

Pet owners can be charged under the Responsible Animal Ownership by-law for committing this offences, Hamm said.

If anyone witnesses an animal unattended in a vehicle call PAWR Animal Control at 226-996-9969 or the Chatham-Kent Police Services.
