The Ontario Fire Marshal Office is investigating after a garage fire in Raleigh Township caused $300,000 damage.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say on July 8th, 2018 at approximately 9:49 p.m. Chatham-Kent Emergency crews attended an address on Charing Cross Rd. in Raleigh Township.

The Ontario Fire Marshal Office will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.

There were no serious injuries to the homeowners during the fire.

“When crews arrived on scene, they found the garage fully involved and the fire had spread to the home due to the severity of the blaze,” stated Phil Thorburn, assistant chief, in a media release.

“Additional crews were dispatched from Station 12 (Harwich) and Station 18 (Blenheim) to assist with the firefighting operations. It was fortunate that a working smoke alarm in the house gave the homeowner; who was home alone at the time of the fire, warning allowing him to escape the developing fire uninjured.”

Thorburn added working smoke alarms save lives.

People can sign up for a CHiRP Check to ensure your alarms are working, located in the right place and not expired.
