The Phoenix Cheer Team is hoping to launch an all ages special needs program in Wallaceburg.

Nicole Okrucky, head coach for the team, said the program would be open to athletes throughout out Chatham-Kent.

“Every Thursday night a volunteer social worker will be available to work right along side the athletes if they would like,” Okrucky told the Sydenham Current.

“We would would start off teaching them a few basic things. Some jumps, teaching them some dancing and some different stunts that they are going to be able to do with the assistance of our volunteers.”

Okrucky said the special needs will have the opportunity to go to one or two competitions with The Phoenix Cheer Team throughout the year.

Although they will be in a none compete division they will perform in front of all of the other cheer leading teams and spectators, Okrucky said.

Anyone that is interested in going to competitions are required to minimum of six weeks of attendance for practicing.

When it comes time to be part of the competition programs, the Phoenix Cheer Team volunteers will be assisting them through their performance.

“It is a lot of fun for them, it is a lot of fun for the volunteers,” Okrucky said.

“It is just amazing to see these teams go out there and perform and the support they get at the competitions.”

Okrucky said it is going to be a drop in style.

“So athletes will pay $10 per visit,” she said.

“You will not be required to pay an upfront fee but the Cheer Team would like preregistration. We are trying to get some preregistration’s just so we can get an idea of how may people are actually interested, because we do need to have the appropriate number of volunteers working with the team as well.”

The Phoenix Cheer team special needs program will be running out of Wallaceburg in the Kinsmen Community Centre gymnasium located at 1416 Dufferin Ave., Unit #7.
