Grace: Something good that you don’t deserve

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Last month my youngest daughter, Beth, and her teammates from St. Clair College were competing in the provincial championship for cross country running.

It has been a tough year for this team, but with a 5th place team finish or better, they would qualify for the Canadian finals.

As things turned out, Beth and another girl were able to qualify as individuals but as a team they finished 7th.

This was disheartening news for the team and so four of the girls knew that their season was over.

However, later that day, they found out that two wildcard teams were awarded spots at the Canadian finals and so St. Clair College got the final spot.

That is grace!

Simply put, grace is something good that you get that you didn’t earn or deserve.

Let’s be honest, we need a fair bit of that in our lives otherwise we would miss out on a bunch of blessings.

Jesus extended grace to us by taking our place on the cross and dying for our sins.

That is the ultimate example of grace, but we can also extend grace in other, smaller ways to touch peoples’ lives.

Let someone ahead of you in the bank line or grocery lane.

Put a little extra in your tip to your server at the restaurant.

Pay a stranger’s library fine.

Tell a grouchy retail clerk that you appreciate the job they’re doing in the midst of a busy shopping excursion.

You get the idea.

Now, get out there and show some grace to somebody so that people can see Jesus in you!
