Kennel inspection blitz across C-K

(PAWR Animal Control)

PAWR Animal Control has completed a 2-month blitz inspecting all licensed Chatham-Kent Kennels in Wards 2, 4, 5 and 6.

In those wards there is a total of 26 licensed kennels.

Residents of Chatham-Kent generally apply for a kennel license with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent if they wish to breed dogs, board dogs, or simply own more than three dogs which is the limit in Chatham-Kent.

There are requirements to obtain a kennel license which can be found at the Municipality website, https://www.chatham-kent.ca/residents/animal-care-and-control/KennelLicensing.

PAWR Animal Control is pleased to announce that after inspecting all 26 kennels, no issues were found at 24 of them.

One had minor violations and the last one is still an open investigation.

Most kennel owners/operators were pleased to have the inspection, adding that they believe it has never been done and calling the inspection “educational.”

During a kennel inspection officers will ensure the shelter, bedding, food, water, cages and runs and overall site cleanliness are sufficient for the animal’s needs.

“We had no expectations when we began our inspections and were impressed by the positive response of most of the kennel owners/operators,” stated Jason Hamm, manager of animal control services, in a press release.

“We are delighted that the vast majority of kennel owners/operators in our community take great pride in the care they provide their animals.”

If anyone believes a kennel deviates for the standards or has an Animal Control inquiry, they can contact PAWR Animal Control at 226-996-9969 extension 1.
