Update: Charges laid after dog attack

Animal Control Services have released an update regarding the alleged dog attack that occurred on January 3, 2019 in the area of Sandys Street and McNaughton Avenue in Chatham.

Jason Hamm, manager of animal control services, said the victim, a 64-year-old Chatham man has received serious injuries to his left hand.

“Due to the injuries the victim required surgery which was completed on Wednesday January 9, 2019,” Hamm said in an email sent to the media.

“He continues to recover from his injuries. Also, the victim’s dog, a 9-year-old Shih Tzu mix received a bite wound to one of its legs. The dog has been seen by a veterinarian and is recovering well.”

Hamm said as a result, a 29-year-old Chatham man faces the following charges under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act:

– Being the owner of a dog that did not exercise reasonable precautions to prevent the dog from biting a person contrary to Section 5.1 (a)

– Being the owner of a dog that did not exercise reasonable precautions to prevent the dog from biting a domestic animal contrary to Section 5.1 (a)

– Being the owner of a dog that did not exercise reasonable precautions to prevent the dog from behaving in a manner that poses a menace to the safety of domestic animal contrary to Section 5.1 (b)

– Being the owner of a dog that permitted the animal to be at large contrary to section 7.3 of Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-Law

The man has a future court date of March 6, 2019.

Hamm said the dog remains in the care of PAW Pet and Wildlife Rescue.
