Flood watch issued by the SCRCA

With water levels elevated across the area, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued another flood watch on Tuesday, May 14.

“Numerous precipitation events in the past week, coupled with elevated water levels in the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair, has resulted in the Sydenham River remaining high in Wallaceburg,” SCRCA officials said.

“Winds from a westerly direction over the next 48 hours will have the potential to slow the flow of water out of Wallaceburg and contribute to the rise of water levels.”

The current forecast is calling for 15 mm of precipitation over the course of tomorrow and Thursday, which may further elevate water levels into natural floodplain areas, agricultural fields and parks, SCRCA officials stated.

“Soils already saturated from the rain in the past week could contribute to ponding and increased runoff into watercourses,” SCRCA officials say.

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

“Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”

This flood watch will remain in effect until Thursday, May 16, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
