Thunderstorms expected

UPDATE – a severe thunderstorm warning has ended and a special weather statement has been issued in Chatham-Kent: Local heavy downpours this evening.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue to develop and will move slowly eastward across portions of the regions this evening. Local rainfall amounts of up to 50 millimetres may occur. Wind gusts to 80 km/h are also possible.

These storms are very localized and some places will see no rain at all.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in Chatham-Kent: At 4:55 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

Strong thunderstorms have redeveloped over a portion of the Chatham-Kent region. Radar shows that up to 35 mm fell with thunderstorms in a few locales early this afternoon. Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm are quite possible in some places. Isolated wind gusts of 80 to 90 km/h are also possible.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
