CUPE reaches tentative deal with province, schools open on Monday

Schools in the area are set to be open on Monday, October 7, after the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a tentative deal with the Province of Ontario on Sunday.

John Howitt, the director of education for the Lambton-Kent District School Board confirmed schools will be open on Monday.

“Today, the Ministry of Education and the trustees’ association announced they have reached a tentative provincial agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). As such, all Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) schools and facilities will be open to students on Monday, October 7, 2019,” public school board officials posted on their website.

“We thank you for your patience and support through the uncertainty of the past week.”

St. Clair Catholic District School Board officials also announced that the strike has been averted.

“Today, the Ministry of Education and the trustees’ association announced they have reached a provincial agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE),” Catholic school board officials stated.

“Therefore, all St. Clair Catholic District School Board schools and facilities will be open to students and staff, as normal on Monday, October 7, 2019. We thank you for your patience and support, through the uncertainty of the past week.”

Union officials stated that more than 55,000 members of CUPE Ontario were set to go on strike at 12:01 a.m. on Monday if a deal wasn’t struck.

The Lambton-Kent District School Board and St. Clair Catholic District School Board were preparing to close all of their schools on Monday if the strike proceeded.
