Drugs, weapons & arrests at Chatham apartment complex

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege over the past 18 months, the Chatham-Kent Police Service has identified increased levels of criminal and drug related activity at 190 Thames Street in Chatham.

Over that time, major efforts have been initiated by the Drugs and Street Crimes Section, Community Mobilization Section, Community Patrol Branch and Crime Stoppers to identify the problems at this apartment complex and work to solve them.

In September, the building came under new ownership.

This new ownership immediately partnered very closely with the Chatham-Kent Police Service to rid the building of criminal and drug related activity.

Police officials allege the process is ongoing, but significant progress has been made in less than 70 days since the change in ownership.

In this short period of time, police have been able to take the following enforcement action:

– 4 Search Warrants executed under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

– 15 persons arrested and/or charged

– 13 Charges Laid under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

– 10 Charges Laid under the Criminal Code

– 4 prohibited weapons seized from this location

This partnership between the police and the property ownership has sent a clear message that this type of behaviour is unacceptable and that the police and building ownership are committed to removing drugs and criminal activity from this location, police officials allege

“The same is true throughout Chatham-Kent,” Police Chief Gary Conn stated.

“The Chatham-Kent Police Service, in conjunction with property owners and community partners, are committed to removing drugs and targeting criminal activity wherever it is happening.”
