Wind-driven minor flooding is expected

Wind-driven minor flooding is expected, as the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority issued a water conditions statement on Wednesday, November 27.

SCRCA officials say water levels are rising quickly and stream banks are slippery.

“Environment Canada has issued a Gale warning for Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair, with winds from a westerly direction today and into tomorrow, frequently gusting up to 80 km/h,” SCRCA officials said in a media release.

“Winds from a westerly direction are causing a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area, slowing the flow of water out of the Sydenham River and contributing to a fast rise in the water level. Minor flooding over the top of the bank is possible in this area.”

The precipitation forecast for today is calling for 15-20mm of rain, with some areas across the watershed already receiving upwards of 20mm, SCRCA officials say.

“Water levels may rise and soils in some areas may be saturated from the rain, which could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.”

River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion, SCRCA officials stated.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely, SCRCA officials say.

This message will remain in effect until Friday, November 29, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
