Crash on the 402 leads to foot chase, impaired driving charge

Chatham-Kent OPP officials allege: On Sunday May 3, 2020 at approximately 4:42 a.m. members of the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 near the Orford Road exit.

Police located a vehicle on its roof in the north ditch.

The driver had fled the scene on foot.

With the assistance of West Region Canine (K9), and the West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), the driver was located a short distance from the vehicle.

The driver showed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested.

As a result the driver, a 29-year-old Southwold Township man was arrested and charged with the following:

– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

– Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)

– Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)

– Failure to stop after accident, contrary to section 320.16(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)

– Obstruct Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 19, 2020 in Chatham.
