SCRCA: Flood watch issued

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch, as 15 to 30 mm of rain is expected today, along with an additional 25 to 40 mm of rain tomorrow.

SCRCA officials say there is a risk of thunderstorms, minor flooding and possible road closures.

“A low pressure system tracking to southern Ontario is anticipated to bring upwards of 30 mm of rain today and an additional 25-40 mm tomorrow, with risk of thunderstorm both days,” SCRCA officials say.

“Rainfall amounts may vary depending on location. High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.”

SCRCA officials added: “This amount of rainfall is anticipated to elevate water levels into natural floodplain areas, parks and farm fields. Soils are likely to become saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.”

SCRCA officials added rising water levels may impact the following roads:

– Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road

– Pretty Road north of McCallum Line

– Waterworks Road north of Courtright Line

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion,” SCRCA officials say.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise, SCRCA officials say.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This flood watch will remain in effect until Tuesday, May 19, 2020, unless otherwise updated.
