Baseline Bridge closing for detailed inspections

The Baseline Bridge in Wallaceburg is set to be closed for some time next week for detailed bridge inspections.

Municipality of Chatham-Kent infrastructure and engineering services officials say there will be a full closure of the bridge on Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day between Gillard Street and Old Glass Road.

There will be no access to the bridge during those times.

The road will be re-opened in the evening, Municipal officials say.

A detour route will be setup: Old Glass Road, to Garnet Street, to Arnold Road, to Dufferin Avenue and to McNaughton Avenue.

A rehabilitation project for the Baseline Bridge in Wallaceburg received Council approval on Monday night, April 27, 2020.

The tender contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc. of Hamilton, Ontario, at a value not to exceed $2,196,194.

Municipality of Chatham-Kent staff will negotiate an agreement with the contractor to bring the project closer to the budgeted amount, as Landform’s bid had totaled $2,888,675.50.

If the negotiation proves to be unsuccessful, the contract will be cancelled and separate tenders will be issued for the structural and mechanical work required for the bridge.

During the Monday, May 11, 2020 Council meeting Municipal officials said the negotiations with the contractor were still ongoing.
